Loren - In order to create the holes along the bind off edge, you must work a few bind of sections of yarn over, then passing the previously bound off stitch (on the right hand needle) over the yarn over st you just created. Repeating this is what creates the holes. I hope I answered your question!

Christine - You might be binding off looser than I did. It's hard to tell without me looking at your work. I might suggest doing fewer repeats of the 'yo, po' for each button hole section along the bind off. This should create smaller holes for you.
